Which? Criticises Bra Fitting Service at Major Stores

Bra fitters at major High Street stores like Marks and Spencer, La Senza and Debenhams are failing to provide the correct fit and advice. In 75 mystery shopping fittings carried out by Which? across the UK, just six chain-store bra fitters recommended a bra that fitted really well. An appalling 59 of them recommended poorly fitting bras – A third of the bras recommended weren’t even comfortable.

Which?, the consumer’s champion says it can’t recommend a single one of the services it tried.

Tessa Russell, assistant editor, Which?, says:

“We’ve been hearing for years that most women wear the wrong sized bra, with the advice usually being to get professionally fitted. Yet the services we tried are no use at all – they’re sending women away with bras that don’t fit properly and could be uncomfortable.”

One of my customers recently came in, having been fitted for a bra at M&S – she said it was very uncomfortable and we noticed straight away it was doing nothing for her shape. The lady in question was an E cup, but had been put into a bra that was far too big in the back. We gave her advice on how to check for herself whether a bra fits correctly:

  • If the breasts are forced towards to the sides or bulging over the top of the cups, then the cup size is too small.
  • If the cup of the bra wrinkles all over, it shows that the cup size is too big and a smaller cup size is needed.
  • If the band of the bra does not sit straight around the body and rides upwards at the back, then the band size is too big.
  • The band of the bra should be firm but not too tight.
  • The shoulder straps should be properly adjusted to provide the correct support.

We want you to be completely happy with your Shock Absorber sports bra.

So to make sure it is doing its job properly, just follow these simple steps to find your perfect fit:

  • If the breasts are forced towards to the sides or bulging over the top of the cups, then the cup size is too small.
  • If the cup of the bra wrinkles all over, it shows that the cup size is too big and a smaller cup size is needed.
  • If the band of the bra does not sit straight around the body and rides upwards at the back, then the band size is too big.
  • The band of the bra should be firm but not too tight.
  • The shoulder straps should be properly adjusted to minimize bounce.
  • Finally, the ‘jump test’ is probably the best way to test how effective a bra is at reducing bounce – so please have a bounce around.

Freya Active Sports Bra – ‘Awesome’

Freya Active soft cup sports bra

Freya Active soft cup sports bra

I gave one of my friends a Freya Active on sale or return. She runs and says she normally has to wear 2 sports bras. Well she tried this last night and said it was ‘awesome’ – perfect fit, excellent support – for the first time ever she only has to wear one bra! Full review coming shortly.

Fantasie and Freya Swimwear

Exciting times in Harwayes, I have just placed the order for the fabulous Spring/Summer Fantasie and Freya swimwear collections.

Big this year are one piece swimsuits with tummy control, which as ever, feature excellent support in true cup sizes. Don’t be confused by cheap alternatives! Fantasie really know their market when it comes to cup sized swimwear – the styles are not just in stunning colours but also cleverly cut to flatter older/curvier and shapelier figures. So alongside the tummy control there are tankinis which really skim the tummy and don’t flash unwanted flesh, there are swim-skirts, up-to-the-minute halterneck tops and fold down bikini briefs. Best of all, all the briefs are made to flatter ladies who have a feminine shape – not cut to fit androgynous 18 year olds!

The swimwear catalogue will be published in February, but you can order ahead if you have seen something you particularly wish me to hold for you.

Sports bras for Dog Shows

I have a customer who is a member of the Rottweiler Club UK  who says sports bras are a must. She said: ‘I go to these events regularly and you do see some sights! If you show a larger breed of dog you can end up running around the ring with him 15 or 20 times. There are a surprising number of larger sized ladies in the competitions. I feel certain they would appreciate some advice on sports bras.’

M&S Post Surgery Bra – no longer available?

I’ve just been informed by a customer the M&S are no longer selling their post-surgery bra, and that several customers have been asking for them. Anybody else heard this? If so, come to harwayes! www.harwayes.co.uk.

My customer has suffered breast damage in a car accident. She is looking for a bra that is suitable for somebody with a larger bust, that is non-wired, preferably cotton rich, with wide, soft shoulder straps. She says that a common problem with larger busted ladies is sores beneath the band, so the bra has to be really comfortable BUT offer plenty of support.

Her consultant has suggested she try a sports bra, but the large cup versions all seem to be crop top style, and she wants to be able to wear lower cut t shirts to show off her cleavage and still feel feminine.

So I’m sending her a selection of  Royce maternity bras to try. Although the product title may put you off if you are not pregnant or nursing, these are actually a very good non-wired bra for the larger cup size, and they have a good, deep V and best of all are available in black. My customer has promised to send me some photos if they are any good, so I’ll update the site with these in due course.

Don't call me single

I just watched a bit of the Jordan/Katie Price biog, following her split from her husband – doesn’t like the term ‘single’ but goes for ‘independent working woman’ – here’s to celebrating freedom.
Programme title is ‘;What Katie Did Next’ so subject close to my heart, also (advert?) for how to wear styles that shall we say, enhance the fuller figure – and why not?

Sports bras for larger cup sizes

I had a customer today who needed a sports bra for size 38G. Not difficult you may think, but she also wanted a V front so that it wouldn’t show beneath low cut t-shirts. Have you noticed that all the manufacturers who design for larger sizes have gone for a crop top style front? I also have a friend who wears TWO sports bras to go running, only a 36D but she reckons none give her enough support – I’m going to send her a new Shock Absorber running bra to try out – look out for the feedback here. New bras for large cup sizes

The hot news this summer is bras for larger cup sizes, with new brand ‘Curvy Kate’ getting a rave review in ‘Lingerie Buyer’ magazine’s August 09 issue. I wish I’d been a bit quicker with my camera as the model turned cartwheels to prove that everything stayed in place! I’d like to add these to the site soon. (Seen at the annual show for the trade, the Lingerie and Swimwear Show at Harrogate this week.)
